Carlos Alcaraz lost the match but won the hearts, the line sums up the 18-year-olds third-round match at the Australian Open 2022. The Spaniard was the youngest player in men’s draw and made some of the most seasoned campaigners of the game taste the dust.

The world No.31 lost his third-round match against Matteo Berrettini but he went down fighting. In a 5-set thriller that ended with a tiebreak in the 5th set, the Spaniard gave the world No.7 a really tough path to his victory.

Tennis Legends Mats Wilander and Alex Corretja complimented the 18-year-old for his unbelievable run at the Australian Open and went ahead to say, “The kid is going to be No.1,”

The 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz came into the Australian Open 2022 as the youngest player with very little experience. But he is leaving with loads of experience and compliments from fans, experts, and even his opponents.

Alcaraz was up against Matteo Berrettini the world No.7 and the Wimbledon runner-up in his third-round match. Berrettini was always going to be a tough challenge for the young Alcaraz and that is what happened. In the first two sets, Berrettiini dominated Alcaraz and attained a 2 set lead.

However, Alcaraz made an unbelievable comeback and won the next two sets. Making the 5th final and final set the decider it was Alcaraz’s youthfulness versus Berrettini’s experience. 5th set also went into a tiebreak and in the final moments of the match, it was Berrettini’s experience that prevailed and the world No.7 won the 5th set and the match.

After the match, Alcaraz’s heroic comeback was appreciated by all the fans, experts, and even his opponent Berrettini. Berrettini said, “I think at his age I didn’t even have ATP points. He’s impressive, he can only improve you know. I mean playing matches like this. He showed everyone his potential today, luckily I won, but really congrats to him.”

Even tennis legends like Mats Wilander and Alex Corretja complimented the young gun. Corretja said, “Alcaraz is showing that you can be young but at the same time you can be brave, You can show everybody else in the world that you can be humble, but at the same time, you can be very ambitious. This is very important. He shows respect for the game; he takes care of his food; he takes care of his rest; he takes care of his practice sessions. He wants to become the No. 1 in the world, and I honestly believe that he will achieve it because he will win majors.”

Wilander also complimented Alcaraz and said, “There were a couple of forehands where Alcaraz did not come up to the ball, he was waiting and it did not come to him. Those shanks were enough. He [Alcaraz] is unbelievable in pretty much every department. Physically he is so strong already. He is so fast on the court. I really think this kid is going to be No. 1 in the world because he won’t stop until he is at the top of his game.”
