“I’m not ready to take over from Nadal or Djokovic yet” Felix Auger-Aliassime opens up on the future of tennis after the Big 3
Felix Auger-Aliassime, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic
Felix Auger-Alissime is considered a bright young talent in the tennis circuit at the moment. The Canadian has proven his mettled many times in the last couple of years and his growth has been very steady.
However, the 21-year-old is currently going through a very rough patch having lost five of his last six matches on tour. Auger-Aliassime reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and was beaten by Daniil Medvedev. The youngster then continued his momentum and won the ATP title in Rotterdam beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the finals. He then reached the finals of the Open 13 in Marseille where again he reached the finals to lose out against Andrey Rublev.
But soon his struggles started as faced back-to-back opening round exits at the Sunshine Double. The Canadian lost in the second round of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Morocco and then flew down to Monaco to feature in the Monte Carlo Masters. Unfortunately, he could not sustain it for long as he went down against Itlay’s Lorenzo Musetti.
Felix Auger-Aliassime is optimistic about his future despite recent struggles
Felix Auger-Aliassime was seeded sixth in Monte Carlo but he was taken down 2-6, 6(2)-7 by Musetti in straight sets. However, the youngster is not too concerned about his poor form as he believes in himself and this loss has not affected his self-assurance.
Speaking to reporters Felix Auger-Aliassime said that he is optimistic about his future. He also opened up on how the future of sports is in the right hands. He shared how his opponent Musetti had a huge following and believes that tennis will be popular even if some of the players bid adieu to the sport.
“I’m only 21 years old, and no, I’m not ready to assume the position of Nadal or Djokovic yet, clearly. I hope in the future that I will be able to become a player who has an important place on the tour,” Auger-Aliassime said. “What I think is that the fans, the public likes tennis. Today they were cheering for Lorenzo [Musetti]. It’s almost full here, so they will still come.”
The 21-year-old is confident that even after the days of the Big 3, tennis fans will have lots to enjoy. The Canadian shared how later it won’t be three players dominating the circuit rather the competition will spread among a few of them making it a bit more exciting.
“It’s special when the older players are at the end of their career, but new players are coming up,” Felix Auger-Aliassime added. “We won’t have maybe only three players dominating all the others. We will have more players at the top.”
