Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios faced a tough test on Tuesday in the form of Italian youngster Jannik Sinner. The two have never met on a tennis court, but the Australian has previously stated that Sinner had one of the most explosive skills he has ever seen. When fans expected Kyrgios to concentrate only on his tennis and not get involved in any controversies, the Australian chose to do the opposite. Kyrgios was seen arguing with umpire Carlos Bernardes about the sluggish court conditions during the first set.

Afterwards, during the match, Nick Kyrgios received a game penalty for shattering his racket in fury as he continued an altercation with umpire Carlos Bernardes. As a result of losing the first set, he began the second set with a breakdown and was pursued by a court invader who sought to take a photo with the Australian after his outburst.

While Sinner was serving at 4-4 in the first set, Kyrgios really got it going. Chair umpire Carlos Bernardes’ radio went off loudly after the Italian blasted a serve at 4-4, 40-15, which Kyrgios returned in, interrupting the point and forcing him to call a let. When the point was replayed, Sinner struck an ace to win the game, Kyrgios sarcastically thanked Bernardes before exploding.

He became enraged and yelled at the umpire, “You should be fired on the spot. How is that possible? How is that possible! The fourth round of Miami, one of the biggest tournaments and you guys just can’t do your job. It’s embarrassing, it is embarrassing.”

Afterwards, the Aussie yelled into his court-side microphone saying, “Get a new set of referees, these guys don’t know how to do s**t! It’s a joke, he’s a joke! Get rid of every single staff and start over everything. I’ll run the sport, I could do a 100 times better job, marketing, everything! You guys have no idea, none.”

The drama was escalated shortly afterwards

A fan even rushed the court in an attempt to get a photo with Kyrgios, sparking a swift response from tournament security. Nevertheless, Kyrgios’ code infractions brought him one step closer to a default, but despite his repeated verbal assaults on Bernardes, that did not happen.

Sinner, on the other hand, remained controlled and calm to win the match 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and progress to the Miami quarterfinals. Also, this is Bernardes’ second high-profile case of verbal abuse in the year 2022.
