As war rages on in Ukraine, tennis players have taken a united stand to condemn the Russian invasion and expressed their solidarity with Ukraine. Former World No.1 Kim Clijsters also expresses her willingness to host Ukrainian tennis players who are taking refuge elsewhere.
Australian tennis star Daria Saville recently took to Twitter to share a screenshot of a Ukrainian mother’s plea asking for assistance amid such harrowing situations. “Tennis world can you spread this please,” she posted.
Iryna is the mother of Ukrainian junior tennis player Mariia Glagola. Iryna posted about the attacks by the Russians which have left her homeland in near shreds. She also appealed for temporary accommodation and facilities being provided for her daughter and other Ukrainian tennis players. “Please save our children,” Iryna posted.
Mariia fled Ukraine nearly a week ago just at the time of the invasion and her current whereabouts are not known. Kim Clijsters responded to the appeal by Saville and offered refuge in her hometown Belgium and host the players at her tennis academy.
“They can come to my hometown In Belgium, where my academy is!” Clijsters responded.
Saville to sport colors of Ukraine at the Indian Wells

Saville who was born in Moscow but later switched nationalities to Australia strongly condemned the vile acts by her homeland and appealed for the de-escalation of the conflicts. Now the Australian is trying to help the Ukrainians stranded in their war-torn country in her own ways. Saville recently stated her decision to sport a blue and yellow outfit to show her support for Ukraine. Alize Cornet joined in on this and responded affirmatively by donning the Ukrainian colors during her opening round match at the Lyon Open.
Saville recently returned from a year hiatus after she was sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury and is slowly beginning her ascent up the rankings. She had a good showing at the WTA Guadalajara and rose up the rankings to No.410, nearly 200 places increase from her previous ranking.
