World No. 68 Maryna Zanevska is a Ukraine-born Belgian player having received citizenship from Belgium in 2016. Maryna is a former US Open Junior (2009) and French Open Junior (2011) doubles champion and has won 1 WTA title and 19 ITF titles so far since turning Pro in 2009.

Maryna recently played at the 2022 Indian Wells Open where she was unfortunate to lose in the first round to Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in a tight 3-set battle. Kostyuk won the marathon 6-7(7), 7-6(6), 7-5 in a match that went on for 3 hours and 9 minutes and was a fully entertaining match for the crowd present in the stands.

With the defeat on Friday, Maryna travelled to Las Vegas and married her longtime boyfriend Philipp-Andreas Schmidt in a private ceremony. With many of Maryna’s family stuck in the war-torn Ukraine that is fighting the Russian invasion for almost 3 weeks now, Maryna put out a heartfelt post on her official Instagram handle to explain why she took such a hasty decision.

“We were supposed to get married in Ukraine. Terrifying to write it, but due to the war in my home country, it’s definitely not the moment to celebrate and party. I have realised in the last 2 weeks that nothing is more important as peace, family, love. I have faced who is real friends, who is not. I realised that there is no need to wait for tomorrow to do something or to wait for the perfect moment because this tomorrow might not come.

“This Sunday 13th of march we got married. (funny fact is that exactly on this day 2 years ago we got into lockdown together, then we said, we kill each other after lockdown or we get married ) and here we are. We definitely gonna remember this wild day and will have something to tell our kids. I am praying that the war will be over in Ukraine, and we can see my family again and celebrate the peace and the special moment of our life! I love you, Mr Schmidt. Yours Mrs Schmidt,” wrote Maryna.
