World No. 1 Novak Djokovic had a disappointing return to the Tour as he lost in the first match back going down in 3-sets against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round of the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters. Fokina was racing away with the match but Novak pulled back things well in the second set to claim a nervy tiebreaker before Fokina capped off the match in the third set.
Djokovic had earlier himself talked about not being in his best form due to the long absence from the Tour he had. While Novak did show his mental strength in the second set as he almost looked to go out in the second set, he could not hold on to the strength to go with the same intensity in the third set as Novak himself admitted that his ‘tank was empty.’
Novak was seen talking to himself during the match motivating himself to keep going and claw his way back into the match but it was not his day. Novak however answered the questions in the press conference about talking to himself and what are his plans for the upcoming tournaments during the Golden Swing.
“For the conversations with myself, this is neither the first time nor the last that I do this. It’s normal in a game where you feel frustrated. We have different reactions. I think I behaved well. I always believed that I could come back in this match, I stayed focused, even if things were against me in terms of how I felt. In terms of tennis, I was far from my best level. In these conditions, in this situation, you have to work twice as hard as normal,” said Djokovic.

Novak has opted to skip the 2022 Barcelona Open and will be instead playing in the 2022 Serbia Open in Belgrade which will be played in the Novak Tennis Center. Having reached the semi-final in the event last year, Novak will be looking for the first title in front of his home crowd and also his first of the season.
