Diego Schwartzman lasted two hours and 23 minutes on the court while winning 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 and broke his opponent five times. Schwartzman faced eight break points and was only broken once — in the fourth game of the match. Schwartzman lost his serve when serving for a 3-1 lead, but fought back to break in the 11th game to serve out the first set. The following two went much more smoothly for the Argentine, who left Berankis with no hope of a comeback.

Kevin Anderson needed five sets to get through his first round match, and he also needed three tiebreakers to get there. The game lasted an incredible four hours and 19 minutes. Anderson appeared to be following the script when he won the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-1, but he was in trouble after two shock breaks late in the second and third sets of the match.
