I just hope everything is good with Vika because I don’t know what happened. Hope everything is okay. Yeah, was just trying to focus on every point, don’t look at her, what happening. I mean, I don’t know what’s happening anyway. I just can see that we continue playing and she continues, like, fighting,” she said.

With all the furor and controversy about the Belarusian players competing under a neutral flag and the harrowing situation in Ukraine, might have taken a toll on Azarenka. She earlier expressed over the conflicts in Ukraine, and even though her own country, Belarus is an ally to Russia in the war, Azarenka voiced out her support for Ukraine and called for peace.

“I am devastated by the actions that have taken place over the last several days against and in Ukraine. It is heartbreaking to see how many innocent people have been affected and continue to be affected by such violence. I have always seen and experienced Ukrainian and Belarusian people friendly and supportive of each other. It’s hard to witness the violent separation currently taking place.”

Ahead of her third-round clash, Azarenka made an emotional and heartfelt plea for peace. She also remarked how the war has taken a huge toll on people and made a firm statement saying ‘violence is not justifiable.’

People can have different opinions and I know a lot of things can be twisted, but what I see is that if anything is missing in this world, it’s empathy and compassion. We are all human beings and we have to take care of each other, that’s life. The fundamental basis of humanity must not be lost in conflict, even in the midst of conflict like this, and if we cultivate these precepts, we can avoid things like this. Violence is not justifiable under any circumstances,” she said during her press conference at the Indian Wells.
