Victoria Azarenka expressed her thoughts over the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and called for a plea between the two nations, who are now entering into the second week of the war. She was one of the players affected but the sanctions imposed on Russia and its ally, Belarus.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine had affected people all over the world. With Russia showing no signs of backing out from the war, numerous sanctions have been imposed on them in an attempt to isolate them and force them for a ceasefire. These repercussions were seen in the tennis world as well, Russia and its ally, Belarus, were imposed stringent sanctions by suspending their federations. The players from these countries are now allowed to play only under a neutral flag.

Azarenka once again expressed her concerns over the recent events and proclaimed a plea for peace. She called out her home country’s vile move to invade Ukraine and said violence is not the way to address the conflict.
“People can have different opinions and I know a lot of things can be twisted, but what I see is that if anything is missing in this world, it’s empathy and compassion. We are all human beings and we have to take care of each other, that’s life. The fundamental basis of humanity must not be lost in conflict, even in the midst of conflict like this, and if we cultivate these precepts, we can avoid things like this. Violence is not justifiable under any circumstances,” she said during a press conference at the Indian Wells.
Azarenka is currently competing at the Indian Wells and has made a winning start to her campaign by defeating Astra Sharma in the second round. The former World No.1 is next scheduled to take on Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan on Monday.
