It’s official: Ashleigh Barty has conquered Melbourne. The Aussie superstar incredibly came back from losing 5-1 in the second set to beat Danielle Collins in straight sets in the final of the Australian Open 2022. With the win, Barty yet again showed why she is World No.1 and proved her credentials as the pre-tournament favorite.
With the title win, Barty now has three Grand Slam titles to her name, one of which she has won in front of her home crowd. Throughout the whole contest, the 25-year-old was constantly cheered on by the home crowd, which must have helped her to make the incredible comeback in the second set.
Barty hugs legend Dylan Alcott post the match
After clinching the title, Ashleigh Barty went on to hug and celebrate with family and friends. However, the person who got the tightest hug was none other than Australian Wheelchair tennis legend Dylan Alcott. Alcott, who is a 23-time quad wheelchair champion, had bowed out and ended his career earlier this week after a loss at the Final of the Australian Open 2022. Among all the messages and tributes flowing in for him, Ashleigh Barty had also paid a tribute to the legend. Barty, who ended the 44-year wait for a local champion at the Australian Open on Saturday, had revealed that she was crying on getting the news before coming out for her semi-final clash against Madison Keys. In her tribute, the 25-year-old had thanked Alcott for inspiring the whole world and the work he has done to inspire and become a model for people with disabilities.
