Watch: “Nick and dignity can’t be at the same place” Fans on Twitter go berserk over Nick Kyrgios’ another on-court ‘Outburst’
Nick Kyrgios
On Sunday, Nick Kyrgios was defeated 6-3 7-5 by Reilly Opelka in the ATP Houston semi-finals. The Australian was given a walkover to face the American in the quarterfinals, but he was on the back foot as soon as he was broken in the opening set, falling 3-1 behind. After a tumultuous start to his campaign, Opelka pressed his advantage to close out the first set, and the fiery Australian cut a disgruntled figure on the court yet again.
The ATP had warned earlier this week that following a succession of on-court tantrums, notably Kyrgios’ at the Miami Open, they would begin to punish players more harshly. Nick Kyrgios was fined $35,000 for four offences, and now he faces even more scrutiny. He was obviously enraged in the second set after what he thought to be a terrible call by the umpire, but he rebounded to 5-5 and still had the match to play for. However, he was penalised a point for swearing when down a breakpoint, and the result rapidly swung against him.
