World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev became the latest entrant into the Grand Slam winners club when the Russian defeated World No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the finals of the US Open 2021. This was Medvedev’s 3rd Grand Slam final and he was finally able to win a Slam title after falling short on the previous two occasions with Djokovic handing him the defeat in the finals of the 2021 Australian Open.
A win in the finals could have made Djokovic just the 2nd man to achieve the Calendar Slam, winning all 4 Slams in a single calendar year. He would have joined Rod Laver who achieved this feat in 1969 and Steffi Graff who along with the Slams also won the Gold Medal in the 1988 Summer Olympics to win the first-ever Golden Slam in tennis history.
While it was shocking to see Novak getting huge support as he is not always the crowd favourite, the crowd present in the Arthur Ashe Stadium for the finals was criticised for whistling and booing Medvedev on crucial points including when the Russian was serving for the Championship.
Twitteratis did not like the gesture from the crowd and the actions were heavily criticised as they tried to shift Daniil’s focus away from the match. But it was meant to be the Russian’s night who nevertheless went on to win the title as Djokovic failed to clear the net handing Medvedev his first title.
Daniil Medvedev hits back at crowd in style during Trophy Presentation
Medvedev has been a frank person and as much as he accepts his mistakes in press conferences and makes jokes about his weaknesses, his sense of humour came back to haunt the crowd during the presentation ceremony.
The US Open crowd had been hostile towards the Russian during the 2019 US Open as well booing him as he made his way to the finals only to be defeated by Rafael Nadal. Even then, Medvedev had thanked the crowd for “their support and energy” that helped him during tough moments.
Taking a jibe at the crowd for booing him on the championship points, Medvedev gave out another epic one-liner showing his witty sense of humour. “You gave me a lot of energy starting from 2019 long ago,” said Medvedev with a wide smile on his face.
This was Medvedev’s 4th trophy of the season and takes his record to 31-4 on Hardcourts this season. With the remainder of the season set to be played on Hardcourts and with his confidence getting a big boost, Medvedev will definitely be a favourite for the upcoming tournaments.
