Currently ranked 115th in the world, Nick Kyrgios returns to Grand Slam action for the first time since his appearance at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships in July last year. The Australian is in battle with British qualifier Liam Broady in the first round of the 2022 Australian Open on the John Cain Arena.

The Australian is well known for his antics on the court which might not interest his peers but are definitely crowd favourite across the globe. With the action returning to his backyard, Kyrgios entered the arena to great cheers from the spectators who hoped for some Kyrgios magic in the match.

Fans demanded and the Australian delivered. During the first-set of the match, Kyrgios employed the famous ‘underarm-serve‘ that often takes the opponent by surprise and results in a point for the server. While many criticise the technique for tricking the opponent, Nick has made several attempts to use it and grab the point.

Similarly, against Broady, Nick used the underarm serve to which Broady failed to hit a successful return as he hit the ball behind the baseline winning the point for Nick. The move got big applause from the spectators as this was the Kyrgios element they were expecting in the Arena.

The serve came after Nick had previously fired a 220 km/hr service and with Broady least expecting the underarm serve, the trick worked for the Australian who did not require to return as he won the point after Broady’s unsuccessful return. The point also saw Nick win the game after having broken Broady in the earlier one to take a 2-0 lead before he closed the set 6-4 in 40 minutes.
