Ice-cold Daniil Medvedev mocks Alexander Zverev’s handshake after losing against Holger Rune

Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev with Holger Rune
Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev is still not over the cold handshake and remarks by his previous round opponent Alexander Zverev at the Monte-Carlo Masters. He showed anger by mocking the German after losing his quarter-final match against Danish sixth seed Holger Rune. The final score of the one-sided encounter was 6-3, 6-4. Though Medvedev was the higher seed, the quarter-final loss against the Danish wunderkind is not a surprise considering the poor record of the Russian on clay.
As seen in the video clips after the match, Medvedev is heard saying “You played unfair” to Holger Rune before offering a handshake. The Russian also showed anger in his press conference later pointing out how salty the German player usually is when losing. The quotes by the Russian during the press meet as well as the cold handshake video are making rounds on the internet.
In the press conference, Medvedev said, “Sascha is not this guy. Sascha is not like Casper, he’s not like Diego, he’s not like Andrey. When he says someone is not fair play, you’re like, Okay, great. Look at yourself in the mirror.”

Daniil Medvedev’s clay woes continue

Russian World No.5 Daniil Medvedev has historically struggled on the clay court season. Despite winning 19 ATP career titles, he has never won any on clay. That speaks volumes keeping in mind that the Russian has reached at least the finals in all of the hard-court ATP-1000 tournaments and Grand Slams. Other than the Mallorca Open (Grass) won in 2021, all of his titles were won on the hard courts.
His best performance ever in a clay court tournament dates back to the Barcelona Open 2019 where he reached the final but lost to Dominic Thiem including a bagel in the final. The final score was 6-4, 6-0. His best-ever performance at the French Open was in 2021 when he reached the quarter-finals. He then lost to arch-rival Stefanos Tsistipas.
With yet another year passing by, the Russian will try to improve in his least preferred surface. The momentum was right there for him having won 24 out of the last 25 matches including four titles in the past five weeks before the Monte Carlo Masters. Now with a loss in the last eight at Monaco, the Russian will try to improvise in the coming tournaments at Barcelona and Madrid.
