WATCH: ‘Running with the set’ Nick Kyrgios wins the point of the day after a fantastic rally with Daniil Medvedev
Nick Kyrgios
World No. 115 Nick Kyrgios played out World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the ongoing 2022 Australian Open. Given Kyrgios is coming back after a bout with covid and an injury-ridden 2021 season and Medvedev in the form of his life, it was expected to be a thrilling encounter between the two and the match did live up to the expectations.
Medvedev won the first two sets despite a massive fight by the Australian. Medvedev looked to finish the match in straight-sets but Kyrgios arrived to the party finally and with the roaring crowd supporting the local lad and jeering at Medvedev, Kyrgios came back to win the 3rd set and force the match into the 4th set.
During the third set with both players holding their serve, Kyrgios and Medvedev played out a fantastic rally among them with Kyrgios snatching the point from Medvedev’s hands covering the entire court during the rally. Spotting the Australian near the baseline, Medvedev took the pace off and dropped a shot near the net.
Kyrgios showed his athleticism and returned the ball to the Russian who was waiting at the net with clear intentions to hit it across the court. Anticipating the shot, Kyrgios ran across the court and left his racquet out to hit the incoming shot from the Russian across the court and win the point.
As he won the point and the crowd rose to cheer the Australian, Nick ran across the court on his way to the place where he had kept his towel and started feeding of the crowd’s energy as he then went out to win the set and frustrate Medvedev who was visibly angry on the hostile crowd towards him.
Daniil Medvedev eventually won the match
Despite the crowd on the back of Nick, Medvedev maintained to keep his calm and wrapped up the match in the 4th set to win the entire match in 2hours and 58 minutes and advance into the 3rd round and will now take on Botic Van de Zandschulp in a repeat of their quarter-final meeting at the 2021 US Open when Medvedev went on to claim the major.
