WATCH: ‘Victory Hug’ Taylor Fritz hugs girlfriend Morgan Riddle in the stands after his emphatic win over Felix Auger-Aliassime
Taylor Fritz and his girlfriend Morgan Riddle
USA No. 1 Taylor Fritz played one of his finest matches in recent times as he guided USA to a winning start in the ongoing 2022 ATP Cup. Fritz started USA’s campaign with a win against 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-4 against Canada’s No. 1 ranked player Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Fritz after losing a tight first set, had to come back stronger in the next two sets in what was a closely fought match. The American won a total of 96 points while Felix had 88 to his name. It was a tight encounter as the duo had more or less similar statistics in all parameters and it all came down to the final set where Fritz having won 18 games to Felix’s 15 got the victory.
With family members allowed for the competition, after his on-court celebration, Fritz moved towards the stands where his girlfriend Morgan Riddle had been cheering him on for the entire game. The two shared a hug near the stands as Morgan congratulated him for a thrilling win which he had just pulled over.
Taylor Fritz also won the doubles tie with John Isner
It was an important win as it put USA ahead in the score before John Isner won his singles match against Brayden Schnur and then the two Americans combined together to pick up a straight-set win over Denis Shapovalov and Aliassime to sweep the Canadians 3-0 and move to the top of the table of Group C.
With no other team able to win all of their rubbers, USA is now in pole position with Great Britain trailing on the 2nd spot after they won their match against Germany 2-1. With only the table-toppers going into the semi-finals, it is an important victory for the Americans who have been hunting for a national team cup for a long while now.
With two matches left against the Britishers and then the Germans, this sweeping win over Canada might just turn out to be very important as set won% and game won% is also important in the standings for the ATP Cup.
