“Well done Carlos” Gael Monfils posts a message for Alcaraz after the teen wins their 4th round clash at Indian Wells
Gael Monfils and Carlos Alcaraz
Gael Monfils‘ good run at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters comes to an end in the 4th round as he goes down fighting in straight-sets to Carlos Alcaraz. The Spanish teenager won the match 7-5, 6-1 to knock out the only Frenchman to make it to the 4th round of the ATP-1000 event this year in the desert.
Having received a bye in the first round, Monfils beat Filip Krajinovic in straight-sets before downing World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in a comeback battle where he had lost the first set but held the fort to win the next two to pick up his second career win over the top-ranked player with his first coming against Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the 2009 Qatar Open.
Monfils and Alcaraz played out a good game of tennis between the two players who are separated by an age difference of 17 years. While the two players were on level terms for quite a few parameters, Monfils indiscipline cost him the match with the Frenchman making 20 unforced errors and 4 double faults to Carlos’ 10 unforced errors and a solitary double fault.
Despite his defeat, Monfils was gracious in defeat as he posted a message for Carlos on Twitter and also thanked fans for their support throughout the week. “Well done Carlos ! Thanks everyone for all the support this week #ontothenextone,” wrote Monfils posting a photo of him and Carlos at the net.
Gael Monfils’ season so far
It has been a mixed season so far for the Frenchman who has lacked consistency. After winning a title in his season debut at the 2022 Adelaide International, he lost in his very first match after the finals in another tournament in Adelaide. He next played at the 2022 Australian Open where he made a run to the quarter-finals that was halted by Matteo Berrettini in a thrilling 5-set battle.
Monfils faced another early exit in Montpellier before coming to Indian Wells. The Frenchman is expected to next play at the 2022 Miami Masters where he will be looking for his 12th career title and second of the season.
