World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev continues his run at the 2022 Miami Masters as he looks to regain the World No. 1 position after being dethroned post his early exit at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters. Up against former champion Andy Murray, Medvedev defeated the Brit with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the 3rd round of Miami Masters this week.

It was a comprehensive win for Daniil who was clinical throughout the game. Medvedev finished the match with 4 aces, 2 double faults, converted 3 of the 6 points, while not conceding a single breakpoint opportunity to end with 60 points. Murray from the other side of the net had 1 ace, 1 double fault, and failed to bring a breakpoint opportunity for him as he makes the exit from the tournament with 41 points in the match.

Despite the defeat, Medvedev was impressed with Murray’s spirit and determination to fight at the highest level despite his fitness issues and playing with a metal hip. With Murray having won big titles before his injury and establishing his status as tennis great, Medvedev remains astonished on seeing the hunger of Murray to keep on competing.

“What Murray is doing is incredible. Fighting so hard to compete again after everything he won and despite everything that happened to him,” said Medvedev during the press conference after his win over the Brit. When asked if he would accept Murray’s physical condition, Medvedev said, “Wow. I’m not sure that at 25 he would ever accept this, probably I would not accept this situation.”

With a second win over Murray having earlier beat the 3-time Grand Slam champion in the Round of 16 in Brisbane in 2019, Medvedev is now into the third round of the Miami Masters where he will now take on Spaniard Pedro Martinez. This will be the second meeting between them having earlier played in the 2nd round of the 2020 Australian Open with Daniil winning in straight-sets.

Martinez comes into the tie with consecutive straight-set wins over Jan-Lennard Struff (mid-match retirement by Struff) and Cristian Garin to move into the 3rd round and set up the tie with the Russian.
