World No.1 Novak Djokovic is slowly and steadily getting closer towards winning the 2021 US Open. The Serbian superstar has booked a spot in the fourth round in New York, after winning the first three matches.
The top-ranked Djokovic has already won the first three Grand Slams of the year and is on the threshold of becoming the first man since Rod Laver to win a Calendar Slam in the Open Era.
“Pressure, we all have it, but top guys, especially for me here with pressure on the line. Pressure is huge but at the same time I thrive on that. I like that because there’s a sign ‘Pressure is a privilege’ — a quote by Billie Jean [King] — and I truly believe and I live by that. So it’s an honor to be in this situation,” the top seed explained to ESPN recently on how he deals with the pressure of history.
Meanwhile, the year 2021 has been special for Djokovic on the records front. He has now reached the round of 16 in all four Slams, in the last 10 seasons. In the process, he has tied with the legendary Roger Federer. 20-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal has achieved the feat on seven occasions, while former World No.1 Andy Murray has done it six times.
Djokovic will play Brooksby in Round 4
Djokovic will take on the 20-year-old Californian Jenson Brooksby in the fourth round of the U.S. Open at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night. While the 34-year-old is expected to get through this match without much trouble, the likes of Matteo Berrettini and Alexander Zverev are floating in his half of the draw.
Interestingly, Djokovic has only won the US Open only three times in his celebrated career, despite being the greatest ever hard court player in history.
Furthermore, it was on September 6, 2020 that the 20-time Grand Slam champion was disqualified from the event in New York for unintentionally hitting a ball at the lineswoman.
