World No. 2 and the 2nd seed at the ongoing 2022 Australian Open, Daniil Medvedev had one of the toughest matches of the tournament when he battled with Maxime Cressy in their 4th round clash. Medvedev prevailed by winning the match 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-7(7), 7-5 in 3.5 hours on the Margaret Court Arena to move into the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam.

While Medvedev has been one of the most candid players and does not shy from showing his emotions, it was one of those days when Medvedev was visibly irritated during the course of the match and as expected spoke about it during his press conference where he lashed at the Australian Open authorities.

“I was quite mad today because of a few things. I was trying to keep my composure because I can go crazier than I did today. It’s because I don’t know, I just felt a little bit not perfect today for a few reasons. First of all is where I really don’t know, like, what should I do to play on centre courts in Grand Slams, because I won the last Grand Slam. mean, I’m the highest seed here, and to play against Maxime would be easier on Rod Laver, more space.

“When you play on a smaller court it’s tougher to play somebody who does serve and volley than on a bigger court. It’s like the same in Wimbledon, I haven’t even played on Centre, because I don’t count the fifth set which I played after the rain, after being put on Court 2,” said the Russian who could be seen getting angrier during the conference as well.

Medvedev then proceeded to speak on why hasn’t requested court preference being the top seed to which he replied, “I usually don’t do it because I don’t want to put pressure on anybody. I rarely ask for the time unless someone comes to me and says where you want to play and when.

Then I’m like okay, this time on this court but in Grand Slams sure it doesn’t work like this, you can always ask but I usually don’t do it. I asked one time here and I got it, maybe I have to ask every time but I don’t wanna be the guy who asks every time to put me on Rod Laver or I will be unhappy,” added Medvedev as he looked to calm down after his short rant earlier.

Medvedev and Cressy were involved in some on-court drama as well with Medvedev calling Cressy ‘boring and lucky‘ but later went on to apologise to him and regretted his comments, an emotion he relayed in the press conference as well.

“I’m really sorry to Maxime about it. I was annoyed about the day, let’s call it this way. It was a difficult match to get used to his style, I knew he was going to serve and volley. I didn’t really get used to it because the first set was better than the other three but yeah he definitely played a good match, it could’ve gone either way, I mean two tiebreaks in the last set, it was a close and tough match.

“The way he played today, completely. It will be tough for him on the return, he’s going to have to win a lot of tiebreaks to get to the titles and everything but I was in great shape today and he took me to a big fight so it means he can take anybody to the same fight,” added Medvedev on being asked if Cressy can become the World No. 1 as he had spoken about earlier.
