Elise Mertens is a Belgian professional tennis player with a career-high ranking of world no.12 in singles which she had achieved on 26 November 2018, and world no.1 in doubles on 10 May 2021. She has found immense success in both forms of the sport.
Elise Mertens has 6 WTA singles to her name which she has acquired on the WTA tour and 14 WTA doubles titles including three Grand Slams in doubles – at the 2019 US Open, 2021 Australian Open, and the 2021 Wimbledon championships. Mertens has had a more successful doubles career after debuting in 2010.

Elise was born to parents Liliane Barbe (Mother), who is a teacher, and Guido Mertens (Father), who is a furniture maker for churches. Elise is their second daughter. She was home-schooled and enjoyed studying languages, having learned to speak French, English, and Dutch/Flemish. Her older sister, Lauren, is currently an airline pilot and introduced the then four-year-old Elise to tennis. Elise Mertens is currently a member of the Kim Clijsters Academy, where she has been training since 2015.
She also has 11 singles and 13 doubles titles on the ITF Circuit. At the French Open 2021, she competed in the women’s singles and doubles. She was defeated in the third round. In the Indian Wells 2021, It was Mertens’s second Indian Wells doubles title. With the victory, she regained the doubles No. 1 ranking. Mertens is a baseline player, whose game blends her excellent defensive skills with aggressive shot-making capabilities.
