Indian tennis ace Sumit Nagal scripted history at the 2024 Australian Open as he became the first Indian in 35 years to beat a seeded opponent at a Grand Slam event. Nagal beat 31st seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan to power through to the second round.

It was Sumit Nagal’s second first-round victory at a Grand Slam event as the Indian had advanced to the second round at the 2020 US Open as well.

After securing a spot in the main draw through the qualifying round, Sumit Nagal beat Bublik in straight sets to enter the second round. This win brought immense praise for the Indian as he battled extreme conditions in Melbourne for two and a half hours. Also, it did not just bring happiness to Nagal but to 1.4 billion Indians back home.

This is because tennis is still gaining popularity in India and Nagal’s win will motivate many young kids to pick up the racket.

The story becomes more so beautiful because Nagal fought his way up. He was struggling to find a sponsor a few months before he defeated Bublik. Nevertheless, the Indian ace was lucky in the aspect that he had the support of his family.

Who are Sumit Nagal’s parents- Suresh Nagal and Krishna Nagal?

Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal was born to Suresh Nagal (father) and Krishna Nagal (mother) who belong to a middle-class family in Jhajjar, Haryana. Sumit grew up in West Delhi’s Nangloi with his sister. Sumit’s father Suresh is a primary teacher at a government MCD school while his mother is a homemaker.

It was Sumit’s father who pushed him to pursue a career in tennis as he had a love for lawn tennis. He even got Sumit enrolled in an academy in Paschim Vihar despite the financial constraints. Suresh Nagal supported his child throughout his career and never let their limitations stop Sumit.

While his father ensured that Sumit got all that needed, his mother Krishna was also there for her kid. She even accompanied Sumit to attend the trials of Mahesh Bhupathi’s ambitious ‘Apollo Mission 2018’ project.

Despite setbacks and quite a few lows in his career, Sumit lived his father’s dream and registered a Grand Slam win in 2020. In 2024, he put the cherry on the top by beating a seeded player.
