At the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina grabbed headlines as he notched up the biggest win of his career when he defeated World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the second round. The Serb was rusty as he was playing in just the fourth match of the year and lost to the Spaniard, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1. This was Fokina’s second win over a top-10 opponent and going by his stellar season so far, it might be the first of many.

Fokina turner pro in 2016 and made his ATP debut at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell in 2017 and marked his debut match with a win. Still competing at the juniors level, Fokina was quickly maneuvering himself on the senior circuit as well. After losing the first three Challenger finals, Fokina finally won his first title at the Sevilla Challenger in 2019. He made his Grand Slam debut at the 2019 French Open but lost in the first round. the next two years saw an upward trajectory in his career.
The Spaniard won his first tour-level doubles title at the Chile Open in 2020, before reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the US Open. He had his breakthrough at the 2021 French Open, wherein he reached the quarter-finals for the first time in his career, his best result to date. En route to his run to quarters he defeated Casper Ruud and Federico Delbonis. And with this, he debuted in the top-50 of the ATP rankings. Overall the clay swing was a memorable one for Fokina as he notched up his first top-10 win when he defeated Matteo Berrettini at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Fokina has shown great poise so far but is yet to win an ATP tour-level singles title. His best result so far is a semi-final finish at ATP 250 events at 2020 Bett1Hulks Indoors and 2021 Estoril Open. His only title so far is in the doubles at the Chile Open with fellow Spaniard, Roberto Carballés Baena.

Born on 5th June 1999 in Malaga, Spain, Fokina had a keen interest in tennis from a young age. He hailed from a sporting family and his father was a boxer. He started playing tennis at the age of 2 and started working with his current coach Jorge Aguirre, at the age of 11. He was the Spanish champion at U12, U15 and U18 levels. Fokina had a stellar junior career as well. He won four titles on the ITF circuit and the most notable one was at the 2017 Wimbledon Boys Championships, where he defeated Alex Geller in straight sets.
