Who is Alize Cornet? Know all about the French tennis sensation!

Alize Cornet

Alize Cornet is a French professional tennis player and has won six singles titles and three doubles titles in her career. Her career-high ranking in singles is No.11 which she achieved way back in 2009 and in doubles it is No. 59 from 7th March, 2011.

Alize Cornet burst into the tennis scene in 2005 as a 15-year-old. On her Grand Slam debut at the 2005 French Open, she made it to the second round after defeating World No. 71 Alina Jidkova. In the second round, she lost to compatriot Amelie Mauresmo in straight sets. This was followed by another second-round exit at the 2006 French Open. She won her first title at an ITF tournament in Dnipropetrovsk in 2007 and won the French Open junior singles title in the same year. She finished 2007, ranked No.57, a mammoth 132 places above her year-end ranking from the previous year.

Cornet continued her resurgence as she made it to the finals of her maiden WTA tournament final at the 2008 Italian Open, but lost in the finals to Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in straight sets. She subsequently entered the top-20 of the WTA rankings as a result and was the second-highest ranked Frenchwomen at that time, behind Marion Bartoli. Cornet won her first WTA title at the Budapest Grand Prix and followed it up with a win in doubles of the same tournament with her partner Janette Husarova.

In 2009, she managed to reach the fourth round at the Australian Open her first and only time she has managed to make it to the second week at Melbourne. But she did not manage to replicate her form of 2008 and slipped out of the top-50. Over the next few years, Cornet had dismal runs in most her Grand Slam and failed to win a title until her win at the Ladies Gastein tournament in 2012, ending her 4-year title drought.

The following years saw Cornet become a mainstay in the top-50. One of her most notable achievements was in 2014 when she managed to defeat multiple Grand Slam champions, “Serena Williams” three times, one of which was at the fourth round of Wimbledon.

Cornet started her 2022 season with consecutive opening-round losses in the lead-up to the Australian Open. In the second round of the Australian Open she knocked out two-time grand slam champion and third seed Garbine Muguruza in straight sets.

While Cornet may not be a player she was pegged to be from her junior’s career and from her early years in seniors, she is one of the toughest opponents to beat if she plays at her peak. She is highly unpredictable and is known for staging upsets against top seeded players. Her most notable scalps were her wins over Serena Williams, Sofia Kenin, Venus Williams,Garbine Muguruza and Svetlana Kuznetsova.

While she may not have grabbed any major headlines over the years, Cornet has been a mainstay in  the WTA circuit since her debut. Her longevity and consistency at the top level is one to admire, especially for a player who has played both singles and doubles for more than fifteen years.
