Clara Tauson
Clara Tauson is a Danish professional tennis player and has won two WTA titles in her career and has a career-high ranking of No.39 on 17 January, 2022.
She comes from a sporting family, her father was a professional Hockey player while her mother was a handball player. Tauson began her tennis career when she debuted ITF Junior Circuit in 2016, aged just 13. In that year, she became the youngest Danish champion after she won the Danish Tennis Championship. Tauson became the first Danish player to win a Grand Slam tournament in girl’s singles after she won 2019 Australian Open defeating Leylah Fernandez in the finals. She was the first woman from Denmark to hold the No. 1 junior ranking.
Transition to seniors
Tauson entered her first tournament as a wild card in the WTA tournament in Lugano and broke into the WTA top 200 to earn a spot in the qualifying rounds of the French Open. She made her debut at a senior Grand Slam at the French Open in 2019 after winning all her qualifying matches to reach the main draw. In the first round match, she upset World No.25, Jennifer Brady, before losing to Danielle Collins in the second round.
The Dane began her 2021 season on a positive note as she won her first WTA title at the Lyon Open as a qualifier. As a result, she broke into the top 100 of the WTA rankings. Although she was plagued by injuries throughout the year, she managed to win two titles and also reached the second round of the French Open and the US Open managed to enter the top-50 by the end of 2021.
Tauson had a decent start to her 2022 season. She reached the quarter-finals of the WTA Melbourne (Summer Set 2), but was forced to retire with an injury.
In the second round of the Australian Open, she stunned 6th seed Anett Kontaveit in straight sets.
Standing at 6ft tall, Tauson uses her height to her advantage and has a huge first serve and is an aggressive baseliner which complements her net game. The Danish teen has all the foundations to become one of the upcoming stars in tennis, should she continue the poise and promise she has shown thus far.
