During the prize giving ceremony, there was a special guest appearance to present the title to Ash Barty. 14-time Grandslam champion, Evonne Goolagong was called upon at the Rod Laver Arena to hand the title to Barty. This was met with a huge round of applause from the home fans, who were brought to their feet.

Evonne Goolagong claimed the Australian Open singles title on four occasions, which came consecutively from 1974-1977. Hence, her popularity among the Australians seems very obvious give her achievements.

In all, Evonne Goolagong has won 14 Grandslam titles spread across singles and doubles events. She claimed the French Open singles titles in 1971, and Wimbledon title in 1974. She is widely regarded as one of the best players in the 1970-80 decade.

What was more special about her appearance on Saturday was that she is very closely linked with Ash Barty. The duo share a great bond, and on several occasions, Goolagong has heaped praise on the current world number’s one playing style. Moreover, the tennis legend has also referred to Barty as her ‘younger sister.’ The two are seen having a good moment and pose for photographs during award functions.
