Kaia Kanepi is an Estonian tennis player. She has won four WTA titles and 20 ITF title, and has a career-high ranking of World No.15, which she achieved on 20 August, 2012.

Kanepi started playing tennis at the tender age of 8. She had a stellar junior career and has ranked No.1 in the junior circuit. She won 13 titles in singles and 3 in doubles, her most notable win was at the French Open Girl’s singles in 2001.

At the age of 15, Kanepi started playing professional tennis. After losing in the qualifying round of Grand Slams multiple times, Kanepi finally made her Grand Slam main draw debut at the French Open in 2006 in both singles and doubles. But it wasn’t until 2008 that she found her first breakthrough, she reached the quarter finals at the Roland Garros, and became the first Estonian women to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final. In the same year, she debuted in top-30 of the WTA rankings. The following year didn’t prove to be as fruitful as her previous one, she struggled with injuries for most of the year and dropped out of the top-50.

The Estonian bounced back from this and won her first WTA title at the Palermo Ladies Open in 2010. She also reached the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon and US Open. This was followed by couple more quarter-final finishes at the Grand Slams, but she never managed to reach the second week at the Australian Open. The Estonian veteran finally achieved this in 2022,after she defeated Australian wild card entrant Maddison Inglis in the third round. She followed this up with a stunning win over 2nd seed Aryna Sabalenka to progress to the quarter-finals at the Melbourne major.

Kanepi has earned a reputation of being a ‘Giant-Killer’ at Grand Slams. She has won nine times over opponents ranked in top-10 at Slams. Her most notable scalps include defending champion Sofia Kenin in 2021 Australian Open, former World No.1 Simona Halep in 2018 US Open and Caroline Wozniacki at the French Open in 2012 among others.
