Leylah Fernandez is quickly becoming one of the brightest teen prospects on the WTA Tour with her performances on the Tour. Her semi-final run at the 2021 US Open where she became the youngest player since a 17-year old Serena Williams in 1999 to defeat two WTA Top-5 ranked players. Leylah defeated World No. 3 Naomi Osaka in the 3rd round and World No. 5 Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals.

Fernandez was born on 6 September 2002 in Montreal, Canada. She was the runner-up at the 2019 Australian Open Girls’ Singles finals and then went on to become the champion at the 2019 French Open Girls’ Singles finals which made her the first Canadian junior girls Grand Slam winner since Eugenie Bouchard won the 2012 Wimbledon Juniors title.

Leylah has 1 title to her name so far in her short career. She reached her first WTA final at the 2020 Mexican Open but had to settle for the runners-up trophy. She finally won her maiden WTA title at the 2021 Monterrey Open in Mexico. She also has 1 ITF title from 3 finals in the Singles discipline while having 2 ITF Doubles titles from 4 finals.

Leylah is currently coached by her father Jorge who was a former footballer for the Ecuadorian national team. Jorge emigrated to Canada at the age of 4 with his family but chose to represent Ecuador when he grew up to be a professional footballer.

According to his previous interviews, Jorge took notes from other players’ coaches and shifted his entire focus from football to tennis once Leylah began to take tennis seriously. In this process, he became good friends with Felix Auger-Aliassime‘s father Sam Aliassime who also took Felix and was his first coach.

With a run to the semi-finals of the US Open 2021, Leylah can expect a good jump in her rankings after the conclusion of the final Grand Slam of the year and will be beaming with confidence for the remainder of the season which will be on Hardcourts now.
