Ons Jabeur’s mental coach
Ons Jabeur’s current mental coach is sports psychologist Melanie Maillard. Her recent addition as a full-time mental coach for Jabeur has greatly benefitted the Tunisian’s career, helping her reach her career-best ranking and 3 Grand Slam runner-up finishes.
Maillard has been in touch with Jabeur since 2017, but Jabeur has revealed in past interviews that most of their interaction happens virtually, due to Maillard’s other commitments. However, on being added to her coaching team in 2022, Maillard has since regularly featured in the player’s box for a lot of Jabeur’s important matches. Notably, her first physical appearance in support of Jabeur at Madrid 2022 led Jabeur to eventually win the title.
Maillard also has extensive prior experience dealing with tennis professionals. She has formerly worked at French Tennis Federation (FFT), back in 1998 to work with young professional players and their coaches. Some of the players she worked with have been mainstays on the tour, with names like Richard Gasquet, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Gael Monfils. Working with the federation’s coaches has been a key aspect of her role.
Jabeur, as a representative for Africa and the Arab world and a role model for upcoming athletes from the region, carries the burden of their hopes, with already having been the first from her region to many milestones on the tennis tour. Her situation, being a pioneer of tennis in Tunisia, sets her apart from the rest of the tour. Having a mental coach as accomplished as Melanie Maillard would undoubtedly benefit the Tunisian in this regard.
