Will Novak Djokovic be world number one after Australian Open 2022?

Will Novak Djokovic be world number one after Australian Open 2022?

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic saw his hopes of defending the Australian Open title come to an end, as he lost the second appeal on Sunday. This means that Novak Djokovic could no longer remain the world number one, come February 21 when the rankings will be revised.

Novak Djokovic claimed the Australian Open title last year, which means he will lose all 2,000 points on offer. His tally will drop from 11,015 points to 9,015 points which is a massive hit for the Serbian. World number two, Daniil Medvedev ended as the runner-up at the slam last year, and will defend 1,200 points.

The Russian could move to 9,735 points on the ATP charts if he is to go one step further, and claim the Australian Open 2022 title. Even world number three, Alexander Zverev could surpass Novak Djokovic as the world number one, given that he wins the Australian Open title.

Meanwhile, even Alexander Zverev stands a golden chance to become the world number one for the first time in his career. The German reached only the quarterfinals of the Australian Open last time around, hence will defend just 360 points.

A title in Australia could take Zverev’s tally to 9,610 points which will be more than Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev’s tally. The German could also go 600 points above Novak Djokovic, who will lose 2,000 points.

As things stand, in the absence of Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev are two certain favorites to claim the title. Rafael Nadal is always among the favorites, however given that he will play five set tennis after a long time, it will be interesting to see how his tournament pans out.

Alexander Zverev will clash against Rafael Nadal in a potential quarterfinal matchup. With Novak Djokovic out of the draw, the winner of the last 8 fixture could face Andrey Rublev who will take the Serbian’s place in the draw.
