Carlos Alcaraz‘s wins do not stun the tennis world anymore, but instead, it solidifies the belief in the community that this young kid is the future of the sport and is meant for big things. The 18-year old gave another example of his talent when he defeated Casper Ruud in the finals of the 2022 Miami Masters to clinch his biggest career title and make changes in the record books.

Having become the first Spanish man to win the Miami Masters will 8 previous finals going against Spanish men, Alcaraz also became the youngest champion of the tournament breaking Novak Djokovic‘s record from 2007 when the 20-time Grand Slam champion won the title at the age of 19. Alcaraz is now the 3rd youngest Masters title winner as well, only behind Michael Chang and Rafael Nadal who were younger than Alcaraz when they won their first Master titles.

Apart from being a joyous moment after winning the finals, it was an emotional one as well for both Alcaraz and his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero. Ferrero recently lost his father and had been in Spain during the entire week in Miami communicating with Alcaraz via phone only. However, prior to his final, Alcaraz had a massive surprise from Ferrero who made the trip to be in the player’s box during the finals surprising Alcaraz.

“Obviously. Juan Carlos was an incredible surprise. I didn’t expect him to come at all. I was already thinking of talking to him on the phone before the final to see what he had to say. I think it’s not that I started to win the final on Saturday but that with the surprise I already won. Having Juan Carlos by my side at this special moment, I already won.

“It means a lot to me to be able to win here in Miami because it reflects all the great work I’ve been doing these years with my team, with my people. I am happy to live this so soon. You know me, I always want more and I hope to get my second Masters 1,000 on the Clay tour,” said Alcaraz during his latest interview with Marca.

With a fantastic start to the season that included a 3rd round run at the 2022 Australian Open, a successful Davis Cup debut, an ATP-500 title on Clay, a Masters title on hardcourt, the Spaniard was grateful to his entire coaching team for keeping him fit and prepared to take on all sorts of challenges.

“Now it’s time for a few days off. It has been a month, a month and a half of great demand because I came from the Davis Cup week. It’s time to rest a few days at home and prepare Montecarlo. Obviously, with Juan Carlos and the rest of the team, we are going to talk about what I have to improve, what I have done well and what I have done wrong.

“It is difficult to be at the foot of the canyon, 100 percent in all tournaments. I have worked for it. I have a good physique, or at least I think I do. And it helps me endure long, tough matches and tournament after tournament. I am lucky to be able to travel with a physio, to have Juanjo, Sergio and Fran. I feel lucky to have the best physios. They recover me to endure the year in the best way,” said Alcaraz further.
