Linda Fruhvirtova‘s name surfaced recently after her great showing in the Miami Open. The 16-year-old Czech was sensational in her debut WTAP 1000 Masters as she defeated some great tennis players en route to her journey till the round of 16. Wins against Danka Kovinic, Elise Mertens and a walkover win against Victoria Azarenka did boost her morale as she wants to keep going on tour.
Fruhvirtova unfortunately crashed out of the qualifiers at the Indian Wells and is yet to make her mark. Bencic’s year did not start the way she would have liked especially after crashing out of the Australian Open in the second round. Her performances in St. Peterburg or in Qatar were not noteworthy. She also lost out in her opening clash at the Indian Wells.
But the Swiss kept her spirits high and played some sublime tennis to reach the semifinals in Miami. The 25-year-old defeated some tricky opponents en route to the semifinals where she went packing against Naomi Osaka only after putting up a great fight.
Bencic will be keen to keep up her form as the claycourt season starts. The French Open will be on the back of her mind and her performances in Miami will surely give her the confidence to try even harder. She had a hard time against Chinese tennis player Xiyu Wang in the first round of the Charleston Open but she survived a scare to win 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 to progress through to the next round.
