Day 6 of the Italian Open was an exciting day as the players competed for the place in the quarters. While many of the results went as expected, there were some shockers as well on the day.

Ashleigh Barty continues her rampant run on Clay

Ash Barty has been in sensational form on Clay this season. She has lost just 2 matches this season and looks to repeat her Stuttgart Open feat and winning another title. She won the match in straight sets recording 6-3 6-3 winning in 1 hour and 20minutes. She will now face American teenager Cori Gauff in the quarters.

Madrid Open Champion Sabalenka crashes out in straight sets

Aryna Sabalenka who came to Rome as the champion from the Madrid Open suffered a shocking defeat to American teenager Cori Gauff who defeated her in straight sets, 7-5 6-3. This became Gauff’s 3rd win over Top-10 players and her first since 2020 Australian Open victory over Naomi Osaka.

This victory makes Cori just the second player in 2 months to win a set against Sabalenka and will definitely be a confidence booster as Gauff prepares to meet the other player who took a set from Aryna, Ash Barty who will be her quarter-final opponent.

Polish teen Swiatek wins a nervy 3-setter

Iga Swiatek continues displaying her potential on the big stage. The World No. 15 dropped her first set against Krejcikova but fought brilliantly to stage a great comeback and won the match 3-6 7-6 7-5 in a match that nearly went for 3 hours. The victory takes Iga to her 2nd quarter-final of the season.

Elina Svitolina wins 6th time over Muguruza

2-time Italian Open winner Elina Svitolina defeated Spaniard Garbine Muguruza in straight sets to book the last spot in the quarter-finals. The 2017 and 2018 winner won the match in straight sets 6-4,6-2 in an hour and a quarter. This was the 11th meeting between the duo which is now lead by Elina in the head to head tie by 6-5.
