Svitolina it would seem has turned a new leaf since the Miami Open, where she reached the semi-finals. As if to prove it wasn’t a one off, she made it to the Semi-final of Stuttgart as well. Here in Rome, her fertile hunting ground, the two time champ is through to the Quarters already.
En route she has beaten the likes of Amanda Anisimova and Garbiñe Muguruza. The win over Muguruza who was among the favourites due to her consistent exploits really showed the kind of mood Svitolina is in. Next up for her is defending French Open Champion Iga Swiatek.
Swiatek has picked and chosen the tournaments she wants to play in which is not usual for such a young player. This is only her second tournament on clay this year. At Madrid she was ousted in the round of sixteen by Ash Barty. Here though she seems to find a way to win. After a walkover victory over Alison Riske in the first round, she beat Madison Keys in the second. In the third she played out a three setter with Barbora Krejčíková to eventually win 3-6 7-6 7-5.

The two time Champion here in Rome, 2017 and 2018, is slowly coming into her own. Her movement across the court, her consistent play was too much for even the powerful Muguruza to handle. Svitolina has time and again showed how to work for a win.
Iga Swiatek did not play her best match against Barbora Krejcikova, but she found a way to come back from match points down to turn it around. This should be a good battle between two excellent movers on court, but Svitolina holds the edge for sure.
