WTA Parma 2021: Sloane Stephens vs Qiang Wang-Preview, Head to Head and Prediction for Emilia-Romagna Open

Sloane Stephens will take on Qiang Wang in the Semi-finals of the Parma Open 2021. Stephens is currently the World No.65 on the WTA rankings and Wang is the World No.48.

A former World No.3, Stephens has 6 WTA Titles on tour including a US Open title won in 2017. In 2018 she even reached the Finals of the French Open. Her last title on tour was in 2018 at the Miami Open. Since then it has all gone horribly wrong for Stephens. Since the return to clay court this year, Stephens has managed to string together a few results that is vital for her confidence.

First she reached the Quarter-finals of the Charleston Open, then the second round of the Madrid Open, and even won the qualifiers to get into the Italian Open. At Parma, she has Caty McNally in the first round, got the better of fourth seed Daria Kasatkina in the second, and Sara Errani 6-3 6-0 in the Quarter-finals. In the Semis she will face Qiang Wang of China.

Wang has a highest ranking of No.12 in the world and has two WTA Titles to her credit. In 2020 she scored a victory over Serena Williams, the highlight of her career so far. In the 2021 Clay court leg, she has managed just first round appearances so far. But, in Parma she is slowly starting to rediscover her game. In the first round here, she beat Misaki Doi of Japan. In the second round she got the better of Martina Di Giuseppe. The Quarter-finals saw her beat the second seed Petra Martić in three sets, 7-6 3-6 7-5.

These two players have met twice on the tour before, and Wang leads the head to head 2-0. Their last encounter was in Wuhan in 2017 which Wang won in straight sets 6-2 6-2.

Stephens is moving on court better and starting to resemble the player who was so successful a few years ago. Her topspin laden returns and great returner of the ball makes her a strong opponent on clay. Not to forget her power.

Wang served six aces and maintained a high percentage 67% of points won in the second serve as well. She has a winning record against Stephens but that was a long time ago. Expect a scrap, but Stephens will come through.
