Gauff has had a rather inconsistent performance this year. She started off the season with the warm-up tournaments in Adelaide. In the first one, she lost her second match against Ashleigh Barty. At the subsequent tournament, she reached the semi-finals where she fell to Madison Keys.
After that, she has had a drop in her performance as she was knocked out of the first round at the Australian Open and then in Dubai as well. However, in Qatar, she has stepped up her game. She defeated Shelby Rogers and Caroline Garcia in the initial rounds and then took on third-seed Paula Badosa in the round of 16 to break into the quarter-finals.
Sakkari, on the other hand, has had an incredible season so far. She has played limited tournaments this year but has steadily been performing well.
