Leylah Fernadez burst into the tennis scene with a breakthrough 2021 season. The Canadian had a stellar season in which she clinched her maiden WTA title at the Monterrey Open and made a fairytale run to the finals of the US Open. Her run was halted by fellow teenager Emma Raducanu.

Her stunning run to the historic all-teen final at the Flushing Meadows might not have produced the outcome she hoped for, but the 19-year-old is proving her performance was not a fluke. Following early exits at the WTA Adelaide International and the Australian Open, Fernandez made quite a turnaround by defending her title in Monterrey and also made a good run to the round of 16 at the Indian Wells.

With all the accolades to her resume at such a young age, Fernandez also has an outgoing personality off-court complemented with a calm temperament. She was seen on the practice courts talking to her fans and signing autographs. Despite her hectic schedule, she took some time out to advise a young tennis fan. The Canadian teenager gave some invaluable suggestions to the young girl who wanted to become a tennis player.

“Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, you don’t need to do everything perfectly. Have fun and don’t forget school. You will need it, even after tennis,” she said.

Fernadez’s stellar run in the doubles at the Indian Wells finally came to an end with a semi-final exit. Fernandez paired up with Alize Cornet and started their campaign by scoring an upset over the 2nd seed pairing of Sam Stosur and Zhang Shuai. The French- Canadian duo then notched up a hard-fought three-set win in their next round before receiving a walkover in the quarter-finals. In the semis, their spirited run finally came to an end after they lost 6-4,6-4 to the all-Chinese pairing of Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan.

She had quite a good campaign in singles as well wherein she matched her fourth-round finish from last year. She lost in the round of 16 to 5th seed and defending champion Paula Badosa.

Fernandez will next compete at the second half of the Sunshine Double, Miami Open. She was knocked out in the qualifiers last year but has no such qualms this year as she enters the tournaments as the 19th seed.
