“You don’t win every day against world #1”- Fokina reveals how beating Novak Djokovic changed him as a player

Alejandro Davidovic Fokina has surely surprised everyone with his sensational tennis at the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters. The Spaniard has now reached his first ATP tour finals as he defeated Grigor Dimitrov in a thrilling three-setter semifinal. Davidovich-Fokina won the match 6-4, 6(2)-7, 6-4 against the experienced Bulgarian as he held his nerves better and showed tremendous character to come back after losing the second set.
Ranked World No.46, Davidovich Fokina has had a great journey to the finals beating the likes of World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, David Goffin, Indian Wells champion Taylor Fritz and now has beaten the experienced Grigor Dimitrov.
“I am so happy to be in the finals, it is a dream come true to have a shot at the title. I have said it before that I was dreaming about this day and it is surely a dream a true and I am very happy,” Davidovich-Fokina said at the on-court interview. “I had my chances in the second set but I think I did not play very well. The tiebreak was very tight too and I was very tired. But I went to the bathroom and said to myself that I want to win this semifinal. I did not start the third set well and he had chances to make it 3-0 but that made me gain a little power to keep pushing and believing in myself.”
“Now that I am in the finals, I would like to enjoy it. I have all the power with me and for sure I will try my best,” Spaniard added.

The 22-year-old Spaniard who only had a single win over top 100 ranking opponents on tour has now beaten three Masters 1000 finalists to reach the finals of the Monte Carlo Masters. He will have to win against another top 10 ranked player to do the unthinkable in the finals.
Davidovich Fokina on his journey to the finals shared a heartfelt anecdote during a press conference where he revealed how emotional he was after beating Novak Djokovic. He shared how that gave him confidence and motivation and made him believe that he can win against anyone.
“ After beating Nole, I gained a lot of self-confidence. You don’t win every day against the world number 1. After that match, I had to deal with a whole bunch of emotions. It was not easy to play the next day against David (Goffin), he played very well. He won last week in Marrakech. I pushed my game as much as possible, physically and mentally, I’m stronger than last week. I have confidence, I take advantage of every moment,” the Spanish youngster said in a press conference.
Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina will face either the defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas or the World No.3 Alexander Zverev in the finals of the Monte Carlo Masters.
