‘You forced me to play my best tennis!’ Ash Barty expresses gratitude to electrifying support from home crowd after scripting Australian Open history
Ashleigh Barty
Ash Barty has scripted history at Australian Open 2022, as she became the first Australian in over 40 years to claim the Women’s Singles title on home soil. The world number one defeated American, Danielle Collins in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 to claim her third Grandslam title, and second one in just six months.
Ash Barty was simply in a league of her own, as she outclassed all her opponents on her way to the title. Double break down in the third set, Barty was under some trouble, as Collins threatened to take the match into the decider.
However, Ashleigh Barty won four straight games to force the set into the tiebreaker, where she emerged victorious. The Australian was overwhelmed with emotions after claiming the title, and thanked the home crowd for supporting her throughout the course of the two weeks.
“As an Aussie, the most important part of this tournament is being able to share it with so many people, and you guys today in the crowd have been nothing short of exceptional. … You brought me so much joy out here today. You forced me to play my best tennis,” Barty said in her post-match winning speech.

“I have to say congratulations to Danielle and your team – you’re in the top 10 and that’s where you belong,” said Barty. The world number one also thanked her family, friends and coaching staff for their invaluable support.
“I’m so lucky to have so many people that love me and support me. You are the absolute best in the business – I can’t thank you enough for all the time and love you’ve put into me,” she continued.
Ashleigh Barty is now just one major away from completing the Career Grandslam. The Australian will have her sights on the US Open, which will be held later this year in order to complete the historic feat.
