“You’re making me blush” Leylah Fernandez can’t contain her smile after being called ‘Rafa’

Leylah Fernandez and Rafael Nadal

World No. 21 Leylah Fernandez is into the third round of the 2022 Indian Wells Open and is now a win away from matching her best result at the tournament having reached the 4th round at the tournament last year while making her debut at the tournament. Fernandez had received a bye in the first round due to her seeding.

She then opened her campaign against fellow young sensation Amanda Anisimova in the second round. Amanda won the first set 6-2, but Leylah fought back brilliantly in the second set to take it 7-6 not losing a single point in the tiebreaker while saving match points in the set earlier. Amanda however retired shockingly before the third set could begin, handing Leylah the win.

Speaking on the court after her win, Leylah was thanking the crowd for their support during the match, the interviewer said, “So tell us Rafa, I mean Leylah” to which the young Canadian started laughing and blushing as the crowd also started laughing. “Stop it, you’re making me blush, stop it,” said Leylah further.

One can cut some slack for the interviewer as Leylah is also left-handed similar to Rafael Nadal and both the players had come back from a set down to clinch the win. While Nadal had to play out the three sets, Leylah’s match was cut short due to Amanda’s sudden retirement from the match.
