“You’re the person who follows the one hit wonder” Andy Roddick lashes out on a Twitter user for calling Rafael Nadal’s AO Win ‘Rigged’
Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal
Former World No. 1 Andy Roddick was one of the legends of the sport to wish Rafael Nadal for his historic feat at the 2022 Australian Open where the Spaniard became the first man to win 21 Grand Slam titles. Nadal defeated Daniil Medvedev in the second-longest Grand Slam final winning a sensational 5-set match to claim his 2nd Australian Open title and his 21st major.
It was a difficult win for Nadal who was returning to Grand Slam action for the first time since his semi-final defeat at the 2021 French Open where he also injured his foot that saw him play just 2 more matches in the 2021 season and was forced to end his season. Not many gave Nadal a chance to win the major but he silenced all his critics with the title win.
Roddick took to his Twitter account in wishing Nadal and tweeted, “Wow. Congrats @RafaelNadal ! An absolute pleasure to watch.” to which he received a reply from a user who said, “Andy you one hit wonder…it’s been a scam to say the least. The whole tournament was rigged in his favor.”
The reply did not sit well with the former US Open champion and he blasted out on the user saying, “And yet, you’re the person who follows the one hit wonder …….. scam, rigged etc. you’re missing hoax, fraud, and witch hunt to really round out the lazy ways to describe a result you don’t like … regardless, I’m happy for Rafa.”
Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick’s rivalry
Roddick and Nadal met on the Tour a total of 10 times with their first meeting taking place in the 2nd round of the 2004 US Open where Roddick won in straight-sets while being the defending champion as well that year. Nadal won the next two meetings before the American won again in straight-sets in their quarter-final clash at the Dubai Championships.
Nadal won the next three matches in straight-sets before Roddick won in 3-sets again in the semi-finals of the 2010 Miami Masters. Nadal won the final two matches with the last meeting coming in the quarter-finals of the 2011 US Open where Nadal won in straight-sets to finish their head-to-head tie with a 7-3 lead over Roddick.
