Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios who is currently working as a commentator around the 2024 Australian Open has confessed what he thought about Russian ace Daniil Medvedev when the latter initially burst onto the scene. The Aussie has admitted that he thought of Medvedev as a terrible player and doubted if he would survive on the ATP tour.

Talking about Medvedev’s unorthodox technique, Kyrgios said that he was not convinced about how the Russian will fare at the highest level. Kyrgios confessed that he felt Medvedev was horrific and should just give up.

However, to Kyrgios’ and other critics’ surprise, Medvedev not only survived but also won a Grand Slam title and that too by beating Novak Djokovic. The Russian also rose to the top of the rankings and enjoyed being there for quite some time. All of this was interesting for Kyrgios.

For me, a guy I thought was going to be horrific was Medvedev. I played against him in juniors in Roehampton and I won him by 6-3, 6-3. I was like the dominant junior and this boy was just terrible. He had the worst technique I’ve ever seen in my life. I honestly said that this guy should just give it up, that there was no way he was going to make it work with those things.

Nick Kyrgios said on Eurosport.

Daniil Medvedev eyes second Grand Slam title

While Nick Kyrgios thought that it would be difficult for Daniil Medvedev to even survive on the tour, the Russian proved him wrong by winning a Grand Slam title. Not just one, Medvedev has come agonizingly close to winning a second major title as well.

The Russian ace reached the final of the 2022 Australian Open but he was denied the title by none other than Rafael Nadal. Medvedev then also reached the finals at the 2023 US Open but once again he was denied a title by Novak Djokovic.

Now, Medvedev is almost into the quarterfinals at the 2024 Australian Open, and considering the Russian’s record in Melbourne, he might reach another final. But it is to be seen if Medvedev can break the curse this time around or if there will be a new opponent who will deny him his second Grand Slam title.
