Ryan Garcia has several fighters to choose from for his next fight after his stunning performance against Devin Haney. As such, many boxers have already come knocking at Garcia’s door, like Shakur Stevenson. Similarly, Teofimo Lopez has now also welcomed the idea of fighting KingRy this year in September in a mega-fight.
Garcia was not able to secure the WBC super-lightweight title after he came in 3.2 pounds extra for the weigh-ins. He mentioned how his body can no longer physically go below 143 pounds and even expressed that he intends to move up to 147 pounds. Hence, since Lopez is currently the WBO super-lightweight champion, he suggested doing a catchweight bout to avoid any such trouble.
It doesn't necessarily have to be at my weight class. It could be a catchweight. So, that way we don't have to have any problems moving forward.Teofimo Lopez via Punsh Drunk Boxing
A catchweight bout means that both fighters will agree on a certain weight, which isn’t an orthodox weight class. Hence, even if Garcia misses weight, it won’t be a problem, and he won’t have to pay a fine like last time. In addition, it also means that Garcia won’t be able to acquire Lopez’s super-lightweight title.
Subsequently, Lopez stated that he is open to making the fight happen in September or December. However, KingRy has expressed an intent to move up to 147 pounds and fight Sebastian Fundora for the WBC and WBO junior middleweight titles.
Lopez talks about Garcia’s antics and his victory
Garcia’s victory over Haney was surprising because of his unexpected performance inside the ring. This mainly happened because of Garcia’s concerning pre-fight behavior, which was all an act according to the boxer. As such, Lopez recently reacted to this and spoke about KingRy’s antics ahead of the fight.
Lopez noted how the boxing world fell for Ryan Garcia‘s antics and that the boxer played it smart. Furthermore, he gave props to him for it and congratulated him for winning against Haney. Lopez is also very pleased with the way things shaped up after the fight because it makes things better. This might be because Garcia’s victory made Lopez’s potential fight against KingRy even bigger.
He also mentioned how the defeat does not discredit Haney’s achievements across his illustrious professional boxing career. Teofimo Lopez remarked how he wanted to cash out and get what he wanted, which was seen in his huge $35 million fighters’ purse.
In case you missed it!
