Terence Crawford gunning for Canelo Alvarez is no new thing. The Mexican superstar has yet to accept a fight against a much smaller Crawford. The welterweight and super middleweight divisions remain far apart. As such, Alvarez might not understand what a fight with Crawford means to his legacy. However, the same cannot be said for the undefeated American boxer.
Even that one non-interested person who does not know much about the boxing sphere knows this. ‘Bud’ had been subliminally touching on a possible Cinco De Mayo showdown since the better part of the year. With a possible super fight against Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, Crawford only wants to fight someone who can enhance his legacy and bank account.
Where I'm at right now, I'm looking at the fight that makes the most sense and that's not Boots. Canelo's gonna bring way more to my legacy and way more to my bank account. Because at the end of the day when boxing is done, what will we have? I would have a legacy...I would have a bank account that would last for ages as well.Terence Crawford to The MMA Hour’s Ariel Helwani (for MMAFighting on SBN)
With the Saudi GEA leading the charge on boxing, it has shown substantial interest in the P4P phenom facing Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis. The 27-year-old boasts a pristine stat of 32 wins, 29 via KO. Meanwhile, Crawford is in a place where if his “greatness” gets undervalued, he can threaten fans with retirement. To that end, he is hedging his bets around Alvarez for legacy as well as a big payday.
First, however, he faces WBA junior middleweight champ Israil Madrimov on August 3rd on His Excellency Turki Alalshikh’s card at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. ‘Bud’ wants to close out his somewhat turbulent 16-year resume with a super fight with Alvarez. Everyone’s chomping at bits, pleading with the Mexican for a big payday fight to retire well. Why? Because the boxing megastar is in for the big bucks.
