In the six seasons Terry McLaurin has played in the NFL, he has been one of the most consistently good wide receivers in the league. He has produced five 1000-yard seasons for the Washington Commanders despite playing most of them with mediocre quarterbacks.
Last season, his connection with standout rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels became their go-to recipe for success. This new connection helped the 29-year-old catch almost the same number of touchdowns he scored in his previous three seasons.
McLaurin’s dedication to the team during its trying times and his ability to help the rookie QB shine are some of the reasons he is demanding a contract that would make him one of the highest-paid WRs in the league.
However, talks have stalled despite both sides attempting to find a compromise. Reporters caught up with the wideout and asked him about how he is feeling about the entire situation dragging on into training camp.
I’ve been pretty frustrated, I’m not going to lie. Everything that has transpired up until this point has been disappointing and frustrating. I want to continue my career here, created my life here. My wife and I have bought our first home here. This has been somewhere where I’ve always wanted to be.

The Ohio State star has been looking to earn what would possibly be his last major contract. He will be 30 years old when the 2025-26 season starts, hence wants to secure his future before time runs out.
Recent WR deals helping Terry McLaurin make his case for $30 million a year
With time winding down towards the start of the season, Terry McLaurin and his representatives will come under increasing pressure to come to a compromise. That could lead him to accept a lesser-than-desired salary.
However, the recent wide receiver market should be his trump card. Justin Jefferson reset the market when he signed a $35 million per year deal. He has been arguably the best wideout and deserved that raise.
Then there are others, such as Garrett Wilson, who signed a $32.5 million per annum deal. It is to be noted that he is almost 6 years younger than McLaurin. Even then, these numbers and the Commanders’ receiver’s consistent production should help his case.
Usually, wide receivers struggle to maintain their performances after turning 30. That is a gamble the Commanders might not want to take. The Ohio State Buckeyes’ former player could sign a prove-it deal, one that does not assign guarantees early on.
Commanders need Terry McLaurin to join team practices early
In his bid to land a major contract extension, Terry McLaurin has resorted to the holdout method employed by every other NFL player. In doing so, the former third-round pick has lost more than $100,000 in fines.

If he continues to miss training camp and practices, those fines will start to mount. The Washington Commanders do not want this distraction to impact their preparations for next season. They would prefer that a deal be signed quickly so that the veteran receiver can report for duty.
Last season, their stellar campaign fell short at the hands of the eventual champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. They want to do one better this upcoming season and try to win a Super Bowl for the first time in more than three decades.
They have two more seasons before Jayden Daniels will demand what could be the highest salary of any NFL player in history. Now, they have the cap space to surround him with talent, and one of them happens to be his most dependable receiver.
