Miami Heat star Terry Rozier has found himself in the midst of a federal investigation over allegations of aiding gamblers to gain from his actions when he was playing for his former team, the Charlotte Hornets.

The investigation started when the feds first looked into former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter. He was found guilty and was banned from the NBA for life. Porter is currently waiting for his sentencing, which could range between 41–51 months.

Investigations stemming from the Raptors star led them to look into Rozier’s actions from 2023. ESPN raised an open records request, which helped them get their hands on information as to what investigators were looking for. David Purdum details what they learnt.

A professional bettor placed 30 wagers in 46 minutes. On the morning of March 23, 2023, a bettor at a sportsbook in Biloxi, Mississippi, placed $13,759 in bets on the unders on Rozier’s statistics in a game that night between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans.

David Purdum wrote in the ESPN article

It so happened that Terry Rozier exited the game after 10 minutes, citing a foot issue. Most of those bets were placed in Louisiana and Mississippi. Six sportsbooks detected the suspicious activity, which led to an investigation from the NBA.

The sportsbook facing that $13k winnings wanted to void the payouts. They contacted the Mississippi Gaming Commission to try and block to payout, but could not, as they did not have sufficient evidence.

NBA cleared Terry Rozier of any wrongdoings

Sources told ESPN that there were other reported instances where heavier-than-expected bets were placed on the unders on Terry Rozier prior to that March 23rd game. That led to some warnings across the gambling world.

At 2:24 p.m. the day of the game, U.S. Integrity sent a nationwide alert about “Suspicious Wagering Terry Rozier NBA Player Props,” according to documents ESPN obtained through another open records request.

All betting sites stopped taking props on Rozier within an hour. These incidents led the NBA to start an investigation into the then Charlotte Hornets star. However, he was cleared of any wrongdoings, as no link to the bettor could be established.

Once the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York started investigating into the Jontay Porter incident, Terry Rozier’s name came up along with Detroit Pistons’ star guard Malik Beasley. The latter is still under investigation, something that has impacted his free agency.

Terry Rozier could continue to play until he is proved guilty

Malik Beasley is a free agent after his 1-year contract with the Detroit Pistons expired. He wants to return, but the investigation seems to have put teams off. Unless he is cleared of any wrongdoings, it might be difficult for him to play next season.

The situation with Terry Rozier is different. The 31-year-old is under contract for the 2025-26 season, and will likely stay put with the Miami Heat. His expiring contract makes him a viable trade asset, but teams would be wary of the result of the investigation.

Even though the league has cleared him, federal investigators have a lot more methods to find evidence. If they do, they could force the NBA’s hand. He could face a similar fate as Jontay Porter did.

Usually that means a lifetime ban from the sport. He could also face criminal charges. All of these aspects could reduce his trade value. With the dreaded 2nd Apron over their heads, teams do not want to make mistakes.

However, there are still nearly 3 months before the next season starts. A lot could change by then, leaving the Ohio native to go on with his life as usual. If cleared, the Miami Heat could trade him for the superstar they have been longing to add.
