The Houston Texans hit the jackpot when they drafted CJ Stroud in the 2023 NFL Draft and now with the addition of Stefon Diggs, their offense has arguably become a threat to the opposing teams in the AFC.
The star quarterback ended the Texans’ six-year playoff drought by leading the team to the divisional round. Entering the 2024 season, they were already contenders but the former Buffalo Bills star’s addition raised their odds even higher. But that’s possible when both Stroud and Diggs are on the same page on the offensive play.
So far, Offensive Coordinator Bobby Slowik has been happy with their twinning and progress in the offseason workouts. Contrary to Diggs’ diva reputation, Slowik claimed “it has been great” working with the four-time Pro Bowler. He also drew similarities between Stroud and Diggs, saying both are very competitive on the football field.
He (Diggs) is a lot like our quarterback in that. He will do absolutely anything necessary to win the game, whether he doesn’t have the ball, he has the ball in his hands, at all times he is in between the white lines and doing everything he can to win.OC Bobby Slowik said via Aaron Wilson of KPRC
While praising Diggs for having ‘all receiver traits’ that one could ask for, Slowik claimed what makes him the right fit for Texans, not to mention the offense led by the reigning Rookie of the Year, is his competitiveness and toughness.
Texans welcome Stefon Diggs despite speed concerns
One aspect that the Bills emphasized the most while justifying Diggs’ trade to the Texans was his decreasing speed every year compared to his prime years. However, that doesn’t bother the Texans so much as they are more focused on having such a strong offensive weapon on the roster.
Talking to people around the league, they believe they're going to have one of the best three-receiver sets in the NFL, along with Tank Dell and Nico Collins.ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported
Even if Diggs was struggling to maintain his speed in Buffalo, Houston’s plan for him is to focus on “savvy route-runner,” as their wide receiver squad is tough with players who can handle going in deep, while Diggs takes care of intermediate range.
