Fortunately for CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans, wide receiver Tank Dell made a quick recovery from a gunshot wound. On April 27, while entering a local pub in Florida, Dell found himself in the middle of a shootout.
During a recent appearance on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, Dell along with Stroud spoke about their individual experiences from that day.
Being a Florida native, Dell was well acquainted with the people at the bar. The suddenness of the incident took him by surprise because he had never experienced anything like that before.
I went back to see my mom. I wasn't even planning to go back and go to the little pool party or whatever… To me it was just wrong place,[at the] wrong time. That s**t just popped out of nowhere.Tank Dell said
He decided to tag along with his friends because they assured him the club had adequate security. However, upon their arrival, Dell and his friends found bullets being hurled at them.
Initially, everyone thought the two rival gangs were duking out. However, the Seminoles County Sheriff’s Office revealed it was a lone teenager, 16-year-old Christopher Bouie who fired a few rounds at the crowd with his black and silver handgun.

Tank Dell recalled running to save himself
Panic-stricken people scattered everywhere to find themselves some cover from the shots. CCTV footage from the club revealed Dell doing the same.

One of the stray bullets grazed the 24-year-old, leaving him with minor injuries to deal with.
It just went south out of nowhere… I thought I had removed myself from the situation, [from] the altercation where they were fighting, but I put myself in the middle of two people.Tank Dell added
After patiently listening to his teammates’ story, CJ Stroud recalled the moment he first heard about the shootings. The Ohio State graduate was in Philadelphia and had just finished watching the 76ers game.

His phone started tearing up with nonstop calls from the team and friends who had heard about Dell ending up in the hospital. Stroud thought the situation was emotional and eye-opening.
It was a good moment for me to realize that I can't go home and do the same things that I was doing too… It's a blessing to have a brother like this.CJ Stroud said
The Stroud and Dell partnership propelled the Texans to a first post-season birth since 2019. CJ was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year after he completed 319 passes for 4108 yards with a league-best 273.9 yards per game, throwing 23 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions.
Dell only played 11 games, because he suffered a fractured fibula, forcing him to undergo surgery. He recorded 47 receptions for 709 yards and 7 touchdowns.
