Unlike the NFL, college football rarely sees incidents of fan aggression. However, that changed last Saturday night when Texas fans littered the field after a controversial call by the officials.
The incident occurred in the third quarter of the game between the Texas Longhorns and the Georgia Bulldogs at Darrell K. Royal-Memorial Stadium. The controversy began when Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron intercepted a pass thrown by Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck.
However, the officials flagged the play by imposing a pass-interference penalty on Barron. As the ruling came, Texas fans began throwing bottles and other debris on the field, expressing their displeasure over the officials’ decision. Head coach Steve Sarkisian tried to intervene to calm down the fans but his efforts went in vain.
The crowd was in no mood to calm down while the game was paused, and the field was littered. Ultimately, they had to reverse their ruling and allow the interception to be counted.

Despite the unconventional behavior of the fans that compelled their team to score interception points, the Bulldogs clinched the victory at 30-15.
Georgia coach Kirby Smart expresses displeasure after reversed call
Even though the SEC clarified the reason why the ruling against Texas was reversed, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was visibly displeased by the decision of the officials. His team took an early lead in the game, that too at 23-0 in the first half, and didn’t allow their opponents to score until the third quarter.
Texas Running back Jaydon Blue scored a 17-yard touchdown on the first drive of the third quarter, which improved them to a 23-15. Surprisingly, Texas head coach Sarkisian was also not very happy with the ruling, especially as it came after the fans’ bizarre behavior.
Nonetheless, this victory holds value for the Bulldogs, as they handed the Longhorns the first loss of the season. Despite the setback in the final minutes of the third quarter, the Bulldogs came through and secured the victory with Trevor Etienne’s third touchdown, into the end zone.
