- Tez Johnson's former fiancee, Laila Thompson-Wainer, accused him of cheating on the day of their proposal.
- Thompson shared evidence, including a chat screenshot, claiming Johnson messaged his ex-girlfriend on the same day.
- She described her experience as "traumatizing" and aims to raise awareness for women in similar situations.
Before Tez Johnson became a key piece in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offense last year, his then fiancee, Laila Thompson-Wainer, broke up with him. She accused Johnson of cheating on her with his ex-girlfriend on the day of their proposal.
Thompson-Wainer uploaded a video documenting her “traumatizing” experience that took place on February 21, 2025. Johnson, 23, took Thompson, 23, to the beach for a photoshoot before popping the question. Laila claimed it was a dream moment for her until she discovered that Johnson had cheated on her.
To support her claims, Thompson-Wainer shared a screenshot of a chat between Johnson and his ex-girlfriend. Thompson further alleged that Johnson messaged his ex on the day he proposed to her. Not only that, he messaged her again after they returned home from the beach.
For some reason, you cheat before and after you propose, the morning of and the night… that’s just something that I will never understand. I’ve given up on trying to understand how someone can be that evil…I think you just have to be a sociopath. And that’s just it at the end of the day.
Laila Thompson-Wainer said in the video
Thompson-Wainer referred to Johnson as an “evil” personified and stated that she will use her position to raise awareness among women who have had similar situations.

Who is Tez Johnson?
Johnson, born in Birmingham, Alabama, grew up in government-subsidized housing. At 15, he was taken in by Bo Nix‘s family. Nix’s father, Pat, an Auburn legend, coached both athletes before they went their separate ways. Nix stayed in Auburn to play for the Tigers, while Johnson joined the University of Troy.

The two reunited in Oregon and spent one season together before Nix was drafted by the Broncos in 2024. Johnson followed his brother to the NFL a year later. In five seasons, Tez made 62 combined appearances for Troy and Oregon. He recorded 310 receptions for 3889 yards and scored 28 touchdowns.
According to reports, Johnson was projected to clock the fastest time in the NFL Combine. If there was one athlete who could match Xavier Worthy‘s 4.21 40-yard dash time, it was Johnson. However, Tez took 4.51 seconds to finish the course, which plummeted his draft stock.
The Buccaneers eventually drafted Tez in the seventh round. He joined Ohio State graduate Emeka Egbuka in Tampa Bay.
How did Tez Johnson perform during his rookie season with the Buccaneers?
Johnson played all but one game for the Bucs in his debut campaign. He scored his first NFL touchdown in a 30-19 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6. In week 10, he scored his first brace in a 28-23 defeat to the Patriots.
Johnson caught a total of 28 passes on 44 targets for 322 yards and scored 5 total touchdowns. Per Pro Football Focus, 23.8% of his 44 targets were pass attempts of 20+ air yards, and he caught 40% of them. New Buccaneers offensive coordinator Zac Robinson spoke about adding more workload to Johnson’s plate in 2026.
We’ll never tell the quarterback to just launch a deep ball if nothing is there, but you’ve got to be able to stretch the field vertically, absolutely… I know there are some guys here, obviously, that can get down the field… but watching Tez Johnson, he’s got elite speed down the field, and he can track it. All of those things are exciting.
Robinson said (H/T: AtoZ Sports)
Egbuka, drafted 19th overall, announced himself as a top young receiver. With Mike Evans on the sidelines due to injury and Chris Godwin less than 100%, quarterback Baker Mayfield relied more on Egbuka to get yards and score TDs.
In 17 appearances, Egbuka caught 63 passes for 938 yards and scored 6 TDs. However, the Offensive Rookie of the Year title went to his peer, Tetairoa McMillan. The Panthers’ wideout received 445 points (41 first-place votes), nearly three times more than second-place Tyler Shough (168 points). Egbuka finished with 66 points.
